Mingquan Bao
Mingquan Bao is an Adjunct Professor at Microwave Electronics/Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Chalmers University of Technology. He is a Senior Specialist at Ericsson Research, Ericsson AB, Gothenburg, Sweden.
He received the BSc and MSc degrees in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, P. R. China, in 1985 and 1988, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in radar remote sensing from the University of Hamburg, Germany, in 1995.
From 1995 to 1997, he was with the Institute of Oceanography, University of Hamburg. From 1997 to 2000, he was with the Center for Remote Imaging Sensing and Processing, University of Singapore, Singapore. From 2000 to 2001, he was with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Germany, where his research focused on interferometric radar remote sensing.
Since 2001, he has been with Ericsson Research, Ericsson AB, in Gothenburg, Sweden. His research work is mainly focused on the development of high frequency (>100GHz) and high data-rate wireless transceivers. This research plays an important role in the development of sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks, to solve the problem of transmitting up to 1 Tbit (1012 bit) per user. The target is to develop prototypes, as well as generating patents to secure Ericsson’s leadership in 6G standardization.
For instance, together with Prof. Herbert Zirath’s group at MC2 (MEL), fully integrated D-band transceiver chips were developed. Based on those chips, a 140 GHz wireless communication link was established between Chalmers Johanneberg and Ericsson Lindholmen. In this 140 GHz transceiver, a novel frequency multiplier was developed, which increases the power efficiency from 7% to 20%. The paper entitled “A high power-efficiency D-band frequency tripler MMIC with gain Up to 7 dB” by Mingquan Bao, Rumen Kozhuharov, and Herbert Zirath won the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society “2016 Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, Tatsuo Itoh best paper award”. Mingquan Bao has also authored over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Most of the papers have co-authors from Prof. Herbert Zirath’s group.
Mingquan Bao is a highly innovative person, as demonstrated by the number of granted patents. Currently, he is the inventor of 44 granted US and European patents and has more than 10 patents pending. The patents cover all types of circuits he has worked on, e.g., voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO), mixers, frequency multipliers, high-speed power detectors, as well as high-efficiency power amplifiers.
