Motorcycle Rider Model For Injury Prediction
Research Project , 2021 – 2024

Purpose and goal: The purpose is to take a step towards developing the SAFER HBM model to be a versatile tool for injury prediction for vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists.
In addition the need for a tool for handling the transformation of the model between vehicle occupants, motorcycle riders, pedestrians etc will be addressed. The goal is to develop an enhanced SAFER HBM model validated for biofidelic prediction of motorcycle rider crash kinematics and chest injury risk including a tool for biofidelic morphing of the SAFER HBM model from vehicle occupant posture to motorcycle rider posture. Expected results and effects: The project will deliver an updated SAFER HBM model validated for prediction of motorcycle rider kinematics and chest injury risk. In addition, the project will deliver a tool enabling quality assured morphing of the SAFER HBM model to a motorcycle rider. Both tools will be used by the industrial partners to develop systems to protect motorcycle riders in a crash. These systems can significantly reduce the number of injured motorcyclists in crashes. Several peer-review publications, two master thesis reports and a Licentiate report will be delivered. Approach and implementation: The project is a collaboration between Autoliv Research, Chalmers University of Technology, BETA CAE and MIPS. A PhD student from Chalmers will be involved in the project. The student will be supervised by senior researchers from academia and industry. The project will have an advisory expert group consisting of participants from the project partners, Trafikverket and Folksam. The expert group will meet every 6 months to provide feedback and suggestions for future work
