Scattering of electro-elastic waves by a piezoelectric circle
Artikel i vetenskaplig tidskrift, 2026

The scattering by a piezoelectric circle of class orthorhombic 222 in an isotropic (nonpiezoelectric) surrounding is investigated for incident anti-plane (SH) elastic or transverse magnetic electromagnetic waves. Both the full piezoelectric equations and the quasi-static approximation are used. The approach employs a power series expansion in Cartesian coordinates inside the circle to derive recursion relations for the expansion coefficients. This expansion is then transformed to polar coordinates to satisfy the boundary conditions. For low frequencies it is possible to obtain explicit, simple expressions for the transition matrix elements. A numerical example is given for the far field scattering amplitude and it is seen that the effect of piezoelectricity on the scattering of an elastic wave is relatively small. Finally, it is concluded that the quasi-static approximation is valid for this scattering problem for low frequencies.
