D 1.1.2. GUIDELINES FOR (the introduction of) ACCESSIBILITY AND SAFETY CONCEPTS IN FUTURE DESIGN OF BUS SYSTEMS

The 3iBS project included three work packages (WP). WP1 concerned “key topics for urban bus systems” and focused on each of seven identified 3iBS key topics. One of these topics was accessibility and safety. The deliverable summarises the findings from a review of literature on diffusion and implementation of innovations in general as well as lessons learned in transport and public transport specifically. General guidelines is provided for the identification and introduction of accessibility and safety concepts into urban bus system networks with focus on bus system infrastructure, i.e. bus stops/stations (from the passengers’ and travellers’ side), information systems (incl. ticketing) and bus interior design. In sum, the guidelines cover the need for an initial assessment of local status regarding accessibility and/or safety; a long-term vision for an accessible and safe bus system; strong leadership; political and public support; the use of innovation procurement; the need for secure and long-term financing; a structured implementation process; sufficient and relevant resources; the completion of a stakeholder analysis; stakeholder involvement; evaluations of solutions; as well as marketing of solutions.
