Improved risk assessment of antifouling paints
Research Project, 2019 – 2020

The project is a collaboration between researchers at Chalmers and Stockholm University. The overall aim of the project is to reduce the emission of copper from antifouling paints and to improve the environmental status in the Baltic regarding copper.


The objective of the project is to:

1. Improve an analytical method, based on X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), to determine release rates of copper from antifouling paints and develop a manual for this method.
2. In different scenarios analyze how the load of copper from antifouling paints to the Baltic Sea can be reduced.
3. Propose measures to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM) and Helcom on how to reduce the load of copper from antifouling paints.
