Skydda optiska kommunikationsnätverk från cyber-säkerhetsattacker
Forskningsprojekt, 2020 – 2023

Optical networks represent a critical infrastructure supporting crucial societal services and carrying a huge amount of data. Such communication infrastructures are a prime target of attacks aimed at service disruption. While sophistication, frequency, and scale of attacks increases, no adequate remediation methods exist. The project aims at developing a holistic framework for detection and recovery from malicious attacks targeting the physical-layer vulnerabilities of optical networks. In order to enhance optical network security, the project focuses on two main aspects of physical-layer network security management: detection of attacks through situational awareness of the network security status, and context-aware defense from attacks. To achieve advanced level of cognition, we will derive new data-driven attack models and formulate new network vulnerability metrics. Novel algorithms will be developed for attack-aware protective and reactive procedures for network recovery. The approaches developed in the frame of this project will be the first of their kind to enable the usage of optical network as a physical-layer attack sensor and cognitive security management. The fundamental research results from the project are foreseen to be applicable to other settings where complex, nonlinear systems are subject to manmade attacks.
