Vaskar Mukherjee joined The Division of Industrial Biotechnology in May 2018 as a postdoctoral researcher. His research focus is to fine-tune and understand the stress response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and to use this information to engineer stress tolerant yeast strains for efficient conversion of lignocellulosic hydrolysate into biochemicals. He applies CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) technology to alter the expression of genes that are related to stress regulation and screens strains with altered regulation for superior inhibitor tolerance. He also conducts transcriptomics analysis of tolerant mutants to link superior phenotypes to the transcriptomic landscapes.
