Virtual Vehicle Safety Assessment Step 2: Open Source Human Body Models and Crash Testing (Viva II)

Who would force women to wear men´s shoes, size 45? Would anyone want to make women drive cars w ith crash-safety systems for men? A sustainable transport system without life and health loss is part of the Swedish transport political goals. The largest cause of impairment due to traffic accidents is the so called whiplash injury. We need to understand the cause of w hiplash symptoms to address medical diagnosis and treatment. W e need to help consumers to chose the safest vehicles. Through VIVA II, contributing steps are in this direction. Sw edish car manufacturers provide vehicles w ith stateof- the-art protective performance. If this can be better quantified in prospective evaluations, the competiveness of the Sw edish industry is enhanced. The overall aim of ViVA II is to reach gender equality in traffic safety. W e develop tools for the evaluation of injury preventive systems for both men and women. Despite the larger risk of w hiplash injury for females, current w hiplash protection assessment is adapted to the average male. ViVA II addresses these differences by w orld leading research on female injury biomechanics, continued development of
1) an Open Source human body model for dynamic simulations and
2) development and evaluation of a numeric model of a future crash test dummy, representing an average female, aimed to support future virtual testing.
