Assessment of Passenger Safety in Future Cars
Research Project, 2017 – 2020

Car passenger safety is of increased importance and complexity, moving tow ards higher degree of automated vehicles, car sharing and taxis. Assessment methods for passenger restraint interaction in the increasing variety of situations are limited. The aim is to answ er the research question on how to assess the protection of the heterogeneous population of passengers in future car crashes. The purpose is to develop personalized restraints. Specifically, the project w ill achieve method developments based on enhancement of tools (physical and numerical human substitutes), and apply these methods to deliver novel protection principles. User-studies and real-w orld crash-data w ill identify Use-cases. Existing tools and potential needs for improvement are evaluated and addressed. For some selected Use-cases, assessment methods are developed deriving at protection principles enabling personalized restraints. This project covers those using the seatbelt as primary restraint (4y up to elderly).
