Electric traction motors in a circular economy
Research Project, 2017
– 2020
Electric vehicles require components that often contain expensive and potentially critical metals, limited in supply and without recycling. To minimize 1) business risk related to material shortage and increased cost and 2) risk of shifting burden from climate change to resource scarcity, components need to be made for reuse, remanufacturing and recycling.
The project aims at design guidelines for electric vehicle components with desired technical performance adapted to circularity. Specifically, electric traction motors will be studied through combining advanced technical design with life cycle assessment. The results will support firms using environmental arguments for competitiveness and can potentially lead to new jobs in Sweden in electric motor manufacturing and recycling. Results can be used in product design, development of business models and governance of resource flows.
