VLBI representerar Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Med den nya tekniken kan astronomer syntetisera den kosmiska radiovåg som observeras samtidigt av flera teleskop över stora avstånd, och på så sätt producera bilder för avlägsna radiokällor, t.ex. det svarta hålets skugga i M87, med en upplösning på upp till ~10 mikrobågsekunder. Dr Jun Yang är senior forskningsingenjör vid Onsala rymdobservatorium. Han är ansvarig för driften av astronomiska VLBI-observationer med 20-m och 25-m teleskopen. Han är också en sällan skådad expert på det komplexa VLBI-systemet (observationer, felsökning, kalibrering, korrelation, datareduktion, etc.). Dr Jun Yang är också senior radioastronom. Han har ganska breda vetenskapsintressen. Han har undersökt olika astrofysiska radiotransienter: Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), X-Ray Binaries (XRBs), novaer och Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs). Dessutom är han ganska intresserad av att studera radiostrålar som drivs av massiva och supermassiva svarta hål i aktiva galaktiska kärnor.
