Analys och modelleringstjänst för tekniska material studerad med neutroner
Forskningsprojekt, 2018 – 2020

Neutron diffraction offers unique possibilities for in-situ analysis of engineering materials under conditions representative of manufacturing processes and service. Instruments at the European Spallation Source (ESS) will offer unprecedented neutron flux, and consequently much higher time resolution compared to existing instruments, making it possible to measure stresses, strains, structural changes, chemical ordering and phase behavior in engineering materials (such as metals) in-situ during service and/or process-like conditions. Detailed analysis of the data resulting from such experiments is, however, complicated and requires advanced modelling and simulation tools. In this project we will develop advanced tools for analysis of in-situ neutron diffraction data and make them publicly available through web applications. Elastic-visco-plastic self-consistent codes for analysis of internal stresses, strains and texture will be developed, alongside tools for chemical ordering and simulations of phase behavior based on the cluster expansion approach. By offering such analysis software as a web service, openly accessible and fully supported, neutron diffraction experiments can be made accessible to actors (industrial or academic) with limited experience and/or without resources for advanced analysis. The project will be performed in collaboration with the Data Management and Software Centre at ESS in order to fully integrate the services into the existing infrastructure.
