Ulf Grans forskning fokuserar på svarta hål i strängteori. Målsättningen är dels att få en bättre förståelse för svarta hål i högre dimensioner, men även att finns tillämpningar inom fasta tillståndets fysik via en nyligen upptäckt korrespondens. Enligt denna korrespondens kan vissa system inom fasta tillståndets fysik modelleras av fysiken hos svarta hål, vilket ger ett helt nytt sätt att angripa viktiga olösta problem inom t ex högtemperatursupraledning.
