Mikael forskar kring användarnas mentala modeller och förståelse av automatiserade fordon. Mentala modeller är en kognitiv representation som användaren har av ett system, för att kunna lösa problem, förklara beteenden och förutse konsekvenserna av en interaktion. Syftet med Mikaels forskning är att kunna skapa säkrare och mer användaranpassade system genom att bättre förstå vad som påverkar användarens förståelse och hur den utvecklas över tid.
