Jan Froitzheim bedriver sin forskning med fokus på högtemperaturkorrosion. Han jobbar främst med metalliska material för fast oxid bränsleceller (SOFC), vilka används inom temperaturområdet 600-1000°C. Bränsleceller kan med mycket högre effektivitet producera el jämfört med dagens teknik. Med förnyelsebart bränsle blir tekniken dessutom koldioxidneutral. Den stora utmaningen ligger dock i att anpassa teknologin för dagens marknad på grund av att bränsleceller har en begränsad livslängd vilket i sin tur innebär höga kostnader för användaren.Jan jobbar tillsammans med sina kollegor, där han även handleder tre doktorander, för att förbättra livslängden hos bränsleceller. De arbetar för att öka bränslecellernas livslängd både genom att utveckla speciella nano-beläggningar (~0,00001 mm tunna), men också genom att undersöka möjligheterna att ersätta dyra keramiska material med billigare och samtidigt bättre specialstål. Forskningen bedrivs inom ett antal samarbetsprojekt både på nationell och internationell nivå. Som exempel kan nämnas Nordiska Toppforskningsinitiativet och EU FP7. Projekten genomförs också i nära samarbete med företag som t.ex. Sandvik Materials Technology eller Topsoe Fuel Cell.
