As I work in the Division for Materials Microstructure at the Department of Physics it is perhaps not surprising that my main research tools are electron microscopes and their add-on equipment. The general aim is to understand how the microstructure of materials influences their properties. And of course to have ideas about how the microstructure could be changed in order to get improved performance.
I work mainly with what is happening at, or near, the surface of a material when it is in use. It concerns various different research areas, such as (i) hard, wear protective coatings produced by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) or Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), (ii) high temperature corrosion of alloys and composites, (iii) atmospheric corrosion of light metals and (iv) mesoporous films on implants.
