Henrik Leion
Henrik Leion is a Professor in combustion chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He is also the program director for the master's program Innovative and Sustainable Chemical Engineering. Henrik's research is experimentally focused on the development and production of metal oxide-based oxygen carriers and their application and use in CO2 capture (mainly Chemical-Looping Combustion, CLC), combustion, energy storage, gasification and reforming. A minor part of Henrik’s research deals with topics such as carbonatization, ash chemistry, recycling and general combustion chemistry. The majority of the experimental work is related to fluidized beds, and Henrik's combustion laboratory has world-unique equipment for research of the chemistry in fluidized beds. CLC is a technology that aims to separate carbon dioxide during combustion. An oxygen carrier in the form of metal oxide is circulated between two reactors where it absorbs oxygen from air in one reactor and releases oxygen to a fuel in the other reactor. In this way, a gas flow of pure carbon dioxide is obtained from the fuel reactor that, without any further gas separation, can be used in permanent CO2-storage. Oxygen carriers can also be used to transport oxygen in conventional fluidized bed combustion (Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion, OCAC) or other thermal processes such as gasification, reforming and thermal energy storage. In the role as program director for the “Innovative and Sustainable Chemical Engineering” Henrik work actively to arrange student exchanges, both for Swedish students traveling abroad and international students visiting Chalmers.
