Carina forskar om exoplaneter - planeter kring andra stjärnor - och hon leder Chalmers Exoplanet Grupp (CEG). Tusentals exoplaneter har upptäckts sedan 1995 i vår hemgalax Vintergatan. De allra flesta är dock mycket olika jorden och inget exosystem hittills liknar vårt eget planetsystem. Istället har den stora överraskningen varit upptäckten av exoplaneters mångfald. Helt nya typer av planeter som inte finns i vårt system har upptäckts, till exempel superjordar och mini-gasplaneter.
Både Europa och USA har satsat stort på nya rymdteleskop dedikerade för exoplanetforskning: TESS och CHEOPS mäter med ultrakänslig precision de ytterst små ljusförminskningar som inträffar när en exoplanet passerar framför sin stjärna. På så sätt kan nya planeter och deras förekomst detekteras och mängder av information kan fås genom analys av ljuskurvorna, till exempel planeternas storlekar. För att ytterligare karaktärisera planeterna kombineras dessa mätningar med uppföljande observationer från markbaserade teleskop som mäter stjärnans hastighet i siktlinjen vilket ger information om en planets massa. Med både massa och radie kan man bestämma medeltätheten som kan användas för att undersöka planeternas uppbyggnad.
Carina och CEG arbetar också med förberedelser för uppskjutningen av det Europeiska rymdprojektet PLATO år 2026. Målet med denna mission är att kunna dra slutsatser om förekomsten av olika typer av planeter och planetsystem och hur vanligt förekommande vårt eget planetsystem och Jorden är.
