Tommy Svensson is Full Professor in the Communication systems research group, where he is leading the Wireless Systems research on air interface and wireless backhaul networking technologies for future wireless systems.
The goal of the research is to create a flexible and efficient converged radio access and backhaul network that can carry all kind of wireless multimedia traffic from/to humans and machines. He is currently active in research towards the fifth generation mobile wireless system (5G). He actively contributed to the recently finished EU FP7 METIS project that identified key use cases, scenarios, requirement and potential solutions for 5G and he is currently working in the EU H2020 5GPPP mmMAGIC project targeting mm-wave solutions for 5G.
Tommy has actively contributed to the European WINNER and ARTIST4G projects, the national long-term collaboration established within the Swedish SFF Wireless IP project and the Sweden-China VINNOVA-MOST IMT Advanced and Beyond programme that made important contributions to the development and evolution of the 4th Generation (4G) mobile wireless 3GPP LTE standards. The mobile backhaul network also needs to be improved to support evolved access networks. In this area he has been leading the project "Microwave backhauling for IMT advanced and beyond" (MAGIC).
Tommy's main research interests are in design and analysis of physical layer algorithms, multiple access, beamforming, resource allocation and cooperative multi-antenna systems for access and wireless backhaul networks, as well as moving networks and satellite networks. He has also an interest and industrial experience in development of core networks. He is coordinator of and lecturing in the Master Program Communication Engineering. He is editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, senior member of IEEE and chair of the IEEE Sweden joint Vehicular Technology/ Communications/ Information Theory Societies chapter.
