Lenas bakgrund är i marin ekologi och hon blev doktor 2006 med avhandlingen ”Effects of water flow on settlement and persistence of marine macroalgae” som handlar om påväxt på skrov och metoder för hur påväxt (biofouling) kan reduceras. Under en post doc på Plymouth Marine Laboratory i England arbetade Lena med marina bakteriers betydelse för påväxt. Lena arbetar även med marina främmande arter som introduceras med barlastvatten och via fartygsskrov och är med i expertgruppen Ballast Water and Other Ship Vectors under Internationella Havsforskarrådet (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea-ICES).
