Wengang Maos forskning på institutionen fokuserar på utmattnings- och tillförlitlighetsanalys av fartygsstruktur, statistisk modellering av havsvågor, vind- och våglast, beräkning av fartygsstrukturell dynamik och sjöegenskapsanalys. Wengang Maos forskning bidrar till Chalmers styrkeområden inom Transport och Energi. Han är också en medlem av The International Ship and Offshore Structures Committee (ISSC), the Technical Committee III.2 (utmattning och fraktur).Han har en magisterexamen i Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering och fick sin doktorsexamen i matematisk statistik år 2010. Han har arbetat i China Classification Society (CCS) i cirka 2 år som fartygstrukturingenjör.
