Wengang Mao bedriver forskningsaktiviteter som bidrar till sjöfartens energieffektivitet och säkerhet. Forskningsområdena inkluderar: 1) Maskininlärning/AI och digitalisering för fartygsprestanda och responsmodellering; 2) Fartygsväderdirigering och reseoptimering för energieffektiv sjöfart; 3) Autonom sjöfart: ruttplanering, optimal kontroll och smart navigering; 4) Statistisk modellering av hydrodynamiska belastningar, utmattningssäkerhet och vind/vågförhållanden
