Bengt Nordén
Jag är nog intresserad av det mesta som rör sig: från att grubbla över livets uppkomst - och om det skedde utanför jorden - till hur en electron rör sig i en atom eller hur ett elektriskt fält utanför en jon kan katalysera en kemisk reaktion. Även om mina forskningsprojekt alla gäller nyfikenhetsdriven grundforskning finns nästan alltid någon intressant praktisk vinkling. Studier av hur molekyler ordnas i en strömmande vätska gav oss t ex en metod att studera protein- och DNA-struktur i lösning, en uppfinning som vi dagligen använder oss av. Undersökningar av hur olika ämnen tar sig igenom ett lipid-membran är ett annat exempel: de kan leda till nya strategier för att få avancerade läkermedel in i levande celler o s v.
I och med de stora anslagen under 2008 (KAUST Award, Advanced Researcher ERC Grant och Linné-centret Bio-inspired Supramolecular Function and Design) har jag kunnat starta några projekt som jag tidigare bara kunna drömma om. De gäller vitt skilda problemställningar men ofta utnyttjande gemensamma kunskapsbaser: DNA studeras sålunda både ur biologiskt relevanta synvinklar (t ex nya principer för igenkänning av långa sekvenser, mekanismer för genetisk rekombination, genterapi och transfektion), men också för att kunna utnyttja dess basspecificitet och strukturella robusthet för att konstruera “adresserbara” tvådimensionella nätverk för nanotekniska tillämpningar (sensorer, molekyär elektronik, nano-motorer). Spektroskopi är en annan arbetshäst som vi använder i en rad känsliga metoder som vi förfinat för analys av struktur och funktion hos de molekylära systemen.
